What is Counselling?


Counselling is a collaborative process between client and counsellor that takes place in a safe and confidential setting. It is supportive and encouraging, allowing clients to explore their thoughts, experiences, feelings and behaviours without fear of judgement, and to set goals for the changes they wish to make in their life.
Psychologist Carl Rogers believed that human beings are essentially resilient and know the solutions to their own struggles. He suggested that healing and transformation happens in an environment condusive to creative thinking and growth, much like plants need the right environment in which to flourish.

Counselling is therefore not advice-giving. Instead, the counsellor's role is to facilitate the client's process of self examination and discovery, and to help them access those answers that exist within themselves.
